ACE Electronics Metal Core PCB

Struggling with overheating in high-power electronics?

A Metal Core PCB (MCPCB) is designed to transfer heat away from critical components faster than standard FR-4 boards—keeping devices cooler, safer, and more reliable.

MCPCBs integrate a thermally conductive metal base—typically aluminum or copper—combined with an insulating dielectric layer and a precision-etched copper circuit layer.

Why Switch to Metal Core?

  • Efficient heat dissipation
  • Higher power density support
  • Strong mechanical stability
  • Extended component lifespan

With advanced lamination and drilling technology, manufacturers like ACE Electronics ensure tight layer bonding and low thermal resistance for dependable performance in demanding environments.

Thermal Design Tip

For high-power LEDs (>100W), we recommend Thermoelectric Separation (Direct Thermal Path) technology. This allows the LED thermal pad to be soldered directly to the metal base, completely bypassing the dielectric layer.

FAQ

Metal Core PCB FAQs

Q

What is the difference between MCPCB and standard FR-4 PCB?

Standard FR-4 PCBs use fiberglass epoxy laminate, which acts as a thermal insulator. MCPCBs replace this with a metal base (aluminum or copper) bonded to the circuit layer via a thermally conductive dielectric. This allows MCPCBs to conduct heat 5-10x more efficiently, essential for high-power LED and automotive applications.

Q

Aluminum vs Copper base: Which should I choose?

Aluminum is cost-effective (1/3 the price of copper), lightweight, and offers 1-3 W/mK thermal conductivity—perfect for most LED lighting and consumer electronics.

Copper provides superior thermal conductivity (3-8 W/mK) and better heat spreading, ideal for high-power automotive modules, RF applications, and aerospace electronics where budget allows.

Q

Can you manufacture multilayer Metal Core PCBs?

Yes. We produce 2-layer MCPCBs with metal core on one side, and up to 4-layer hybrid structures where the metal base acts as a dedicated heat spreader. For complex multilayer designs with high-density interconnects, we recommend thermoelectric separation (SinkPAD) technology to ensure optimal thermal paths.

Q

What is "Thermoelectric Separation" (SinkPAD/DTP)?

Thermoelectric separation creates a direct copper-to-copper thermal path by soldering the component's thermal pad directly to the metal base, bypassing the dielectric layer entirely. This achieves thermal conductivity of 100-400 W/mK—perfect for high-power LEDs (>100W), IGBT modules, and power transistors where standard MCPCB thermal resistance is insufficient.

Q

What certifications do you hold for MCPCB production?

Our MCPCB production is certified to IATF 16949 (Automotive), ISO 9001 (Quality), and ISO 14001 (Environmental). We are also UL Listed (E360000) for rigid PCBs including metal core variants. All automotive-grade MCPCBs follow IPC-6012 Class 3 standards with full traceability.

Q

What is the typical lead time for MCPCB prototypes?

Standard single-layer aluminum MCPCB prototypes ship in 3-5 days. Double-layer or copper base designs require 5-7 days. Thermoelectric separation (SinkPAD) prototypes typically take 7-10 days due to additional processing steps. We offer 24-48 hour expedited services for urgent automotive and lighting projects.
